The center has completed over 1,300 birmingham hip resurfacing procedures and has also custom-built a ward specifically for overseas hip replacement patients.
The traditional Total Hip Replacement (THR), invariably have a 'Metal on Plastic' bearing. These are reasonably successful in elderly relatively inactive patients, but offers unacceptably poor long term outcomes for young, active patients often with unavoidable multiple revision surgeries and associated complications. It is to avoid this unfortunate sequence of events that Hip Resurfacing Surgery(HRS) was developed.
The outstanding problem in conventional Hip Replacement is the young active patient with an arthritic hip. The problem is worse if the patient is male (higher loosening rates with THR), has an active job and wishes to play sport or engage in physical activity to keep himself healthy.
The most extreme and well known example of this is the American footballer & baseball star Bo Jackson, who had a total hip replacement and returned to sport only for his hip to fail in under one year.
Hip Resurfacing epitomizes medical achievements in arthroplasty. Hip Resurfacing is a new conservative surgical technique of arthroplasty of the hip. In this, only the diseased surface of the head of femur is replaced with a cobalt chromium cap , retaining all the bone in the hip joint. The lining of the socket (acetabulam) is also replaced with the cobalt chromium cup. This mimics the natural hip closely and has near normal bio-mechanics, load transfer and range of movement.
